Richard H. Smith
Senior Client Executive

Richard’s 25-year wealth management experience means that he is expertly placed to provide clients with the special wealth management support that our discerning investors need. Prior to joining AFH Private Wealth, Richard was the regional director and head of WH Ireland’s Birmingham office. He has also held the position of senior client executive at Brewin Dolphin Securities Ltd. Alongside his role as a senior client executive, Richard heads up our team of portfolio managers and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investments and a member of the Birmingham Stock Exchange Committee.

Austin Broad
Group Head of Advice

Austin is an experienced independent financial adviser and technical expert, he has over 15 years’ experience as an IFA prior to joining AFH. Previously he served as district manager for Nationwide Building Society, briefly tying this with an adviser role. Austin has been with AFH for 10 years, being appointed to the board in October 2015. As the group head of advice, his responsibilities include the strategic development of the quality and direction of financial planning and investment advice within the business, as well as working closely with the head of Risk to develop strategic planning within the group whilst managing risks.

Leonid Nji
Group Head of Research

Leonid received his Master in Financial Economics at Leicester University, before joining the investment strategy and capital team at Legal & General. Here he contributed to the fund research process, conducted the analysis of various fund strategies and monitored the performance of investment managers. He was also involved in the development and implementation of the Legal & General With Profits Fund. At AFH, Leonid leads the Group’s investment research function, responsible for equity research, fund research, manager selection, asset allocation and model portfolio construction across multiple platforms.

Stuart Humphries
Senior Client Executive

Stuart brings over 15 years of experience in dealing for and advising high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals to AFH Private Wealth. He started his investment career with J.P. Morgan before relocating to New York to work for a boutique investment house dealing in US equities. Following a successful period in New York, he returned to London to join a privately owned investment advisory firm, specialising in the day-to-day management of private client, pension and corporate portfolios. In addition to becoming a Chartered Wealth Manager, Stuart is also a Chartered Fellow of the Institute for Securities & Investments.


Laurie Beevers
Senior Client Executive

After graduating from the University of Bristol, Laurie initially entered the financial services industry as a graduate trainee with National Westminster Bank before joining London stockbroker Orme & Eykyn in the early 1970s. He moved to Cardiff in 1973 with Lyddon & Co., before heading ‘back home‘ to Manchester. In 1979, he became a partner with Charlton Seal Dimmock & Co. After a short period with John Siddall & Co., in the mid 90s, Laurie was appointed CEO of WH Ireland Group Plc. Over the next 10+ years he grew the company from one to 15 offices in the UK, with one in Australia. After resigning from his position as director in 2010, Laurie set up W H I Stockbrokers Ltd (W H Ireland) in Colwyn Bay, in conjunction with his business partner Paul Weston, before joining AFH Private Wealth in 2018. Laurie played a significant part in the listing of W H Ireland on AIM in 2000, and in the following years, along with his co-directors, oversaw the firm become one of the largest NOMAD brokers in the UK. Laurie is a keen follower of the resources industry, having been on the board of several Australian Stock Exchange-quoted resource companies in the 1980s & 1990s. Laurie is a lifetime member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.


Andrew Jones
Client Executive

Andrew has over 11 years’ experience in stockbroking and wealth management, having joined W H Ireland in 2007. Andrew headed up the office’s probate service, dealing with local solicitors and accountants as well as private clients. He became Head of Office in 2015, but continued with the day-to-day management of private client portfolios. Andrew is a Chartered wealth manager, as well as being a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investments. Andrew holds a BSc honours degree in medical genetics from the University of Leicester.

Colin Warren
Chief Economist

Colin joined AFH in 2009 as Chief Economist. Colin’s research and insight form an invaluable input to the asset allocation process for client portfolios. He sits on the company’s Investment Committee and provides timely analysis of the economic issues affecting global financial markets. Colin has over 20 years’ experience as an economist, having previously worked for GFC Economics and Tokai Bank Europe. He holds a first-class honours degree in economics from the University of Manchester, where he was awarded the Cobden prize for economics, and also holds a post-graduate diploma in European business management and information systems.

Andrew Powell
Head of Dealing

Andrew joined AFH Private Wealth in 2013 and is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investments. Andrew is the Head of Dealing at AFH Private Wealth, and also a voting member of the Investment Committee (IC), impacting important decisions made by the IC. He has held previous positions within the dealing teams at WH Ireland, Fyshe Horton Finney and EFG Harris Allday. Andrew holds a degree in economics from the University of Manchester.  


Helen Culshaw
Senior Administrator

Helen joined the office in 2011, having previously worked for Brewin Dolphin for 11 years in Llandudno. Helen’s considerable knowledge of all things stockbroking adds to Colwyn Bay’s experience in the day-to-day running of private client portfolios. This includes liaising with private clients, solicitors and accountants alongside client on-boarding, transfers and probate services as well as overseeing the office’s administration.

Abigail Williams
Senior Administrator

Abigail joined AFH in 2016 and is the senior administrator for AFH Private Wealth. She is the key point of contact for all AFH advisers, clients and external service providers, as well as providing full PA support to senior client executives Richard Smith and Stuart Humphries. Abigail is currently working towards the Investment Advice Diploma (IAD).
