Why working with a financial adviser can boost your mental wellbeing

To mark World Mental Health Day, we spoke to one of AFH Wealth Management’s clients about the peace of mind working with an Independent Financial Adviser provides. Read on to learn more about Maureen, who became extremely anxious after receiving a significant windfall.

In particular, she worried about having so much wealth and how best to deal with it. However, her AFH Financial Advisee and Client Services Executive, helped Maureen enjoy financial wellbeing.

This in turn provided the peace of mind and quality of life she always hoped the windfall would bring. Read on to learn more about Maureen’s story.

Up until the moment Maureen received her windfall, she hadn’t felt the need to talk to a financial adviser. But that changed when she received the seven-figure sum, which she now realises caused her significant amounts of stress at the time.

While you might think receiving a substantial amount of money would negate financial worry, Maureen explains that it actually raised a number of questions for her. These included:

  • ·       what should she do with the money?

  • ·       should she invest it or put it in savings?

  • ·       how could she invest it when she’d never invested before?

  • ·       would her windfall provide the lifestyle she wanted for the rest of her life?

As someone who had suffered from anxiety in the past, not knowing the answers to these questions took a toll on her mental wellbeing. Consequently, the money began to feel like a curse, not a blessing.

“I really started to panic,” Maureen explained.

“I had all this money and no idea what to do with it. I knew I didn’t want to squander it, but I didn’t know how best to use it.

“I felt as though I had no control over my financial future, which created quite a bit of anxiety and stress for me. While I was obviously pleased to have the windfall on the one hand, it wasn’t providing the mental health benefits you might assume it would bring.”

After speaking to friends and family, she decided to contact a financial adviser. Central to the decision was the knowledge that her money would be in safe hands, and she would have a professional at her side who could explain the complicated world of finance to her as and when needed.

The decision to work with a financial adviser, she points out, means she can now rest easy when it comes to her wealth, and gets to enjoy the lifestyle it provides.

“I feel much more at ease and in control of my money,” she continued.

“Without my adviser I would still feel stressed about my money, which would not be good for my mental health. My adviser explains finance in a way that I understand, which means I sleep better at night.”

Maureen, whose AFH Independent Financial Adviser is Ray Broomfield, adds that knowing her money is in safe hands isn’t the only reason she rests more easily. The other reason is the prompt service she receives.

Together with Ray’s Client Services Executive, Sarah Smith, Maureen is never left wondering what’s happing with her money. If she asks a question, she always receives a prompt response, meaning she’s not left worrying about what’s happening.

“Ray is very good at keeping me updated and returning my calls. I always know where I am, which I find very reassuring. Sarah also puts my mind at rest, because she also explains everything very clearly, so I always know what’s being done and why.

“I’ve come to think of them as being like my brother and sister.”

As someone who understands the mental health benefits of working with a financial adviser, she recommends others do the same.

“Having wealth does not always provide mental wellbeing,” Maureen explains.

“Yet working with a financial adviser can help to provide it, as you have a much better understanding of your options and how to use your money to support your lifestyle. I’m so pleased I work with Ray and Sarah. They allow me to enjoy life, knowing that my money’s being looked after by professionals who care.”
